How to split a bank statement PDFin six short steps
Follow along once and the whole routine becomes muscle memory: load the statement, glance at the detected months, download the files. Total time for a 12-month PDF is about two minutes.
- 1
Open the bank statement splitter
Go to FileHook's Bank Statement Splitter page in any modern browser. It loads as an ordinary web page; there is no software to install.
- 2
Drop in your multi-month statement
Drag the statement PDF onto the upload card, or click to browse. Files up to 50 MB load. Statements from Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, US Bank, PNC, Truist and most credit unions all carry the date headers the splitter needs. The file is read locally in your tab and is not uploaded.
- 3
Wait for month detection
The splitter scans every page's text layer for markers like "Statement period", "January 2024", or transaction-date stamps. A page without its own header inherits the month of the page before it, which keeps long transaction lists together. Expect a few seconds for a typical file.
- 4
Review the detected groups
Each detected month appears as a card showing its page range, page count and output file name. When a month or year reads wrong, correct it with the dropdown on that card and the file name updates to match. Most statements need zero edits.
- 5
Pick free or Pro
The free tier splits the first 3 months of the statement. Pro lifts the cap to the full year and adds batch uploads for $3.99 a month, which is the sensible route for a year-end tax batch.
- 6
Download as ZIP or individual PDFs
Take the ZIP, which is named after your original file with -by-month added, or save months one at a time. Individual files are named by month and year, like Jan-2024.pdf; when the year could not be read, the file is named Mon.pdf instead.
Three things worth knowing up front
- Scans won't auto-split. A statement scanned from paper has no text layer to read, so detection has nothing to work with. Use the PDF your bank's website exports; in-browser OCR for scans is on the roadmap.
- Free means the first 3 months. That covers the classic "last quarter" request. A full year in one pass is Pro, at $3.99 a month.
- One split per day on free. Plan around it if you have several statements; Pro removes the daily limit along with the month cap.
Walkthrough troubleshooting
How long does it take to split a 12-month statement?+
Around 5 to 15 seconds of scanning on a normal laptop, then the split itself is nearly instant. Files close to the 50 MB cap take longer because every page's text has to be parsed before grouping starts.
Can I split a statement that mixes two accounts?+
When both accounts run on the same statement period, the pages group by month regardless of account and the split works as normal. When each account carries its own period in the same PDF, first cut the file apart by account with the regular Split PDF tool, then walk each account through the steps above.
What if my bank uses non-standard date formats?+
Most common formats are recognised: MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, "January 2024", "Jan 1, 2024", "01-Jan-24". A format the scanner misses shows up as a group with a wrong or missing label; fix it in step 4 with the dropdown and carry on.
What if I only need one month out of the year?+
Skip the ZIP and save just that month's PDF from the results list. Each file stands alone, so there is no need to download eleven months you won't send.
Run the steps with a real file
Grab last year's statement and try the walkthrough. If step 3 finds your months, and it almost always does, you're two clicks from done.
