Edit a PDF online,right in your browser

Drop the PDF onto the card at the top of this page. It opens in the editor straight away, with the page rail on the left and the toolbar down the side.

Click the line you want to change and retype it, or pick a tool from the toolbar for anything else: text, whiteout, forms, signatures, highlights, shapes, images, links, and page moves all live in the same bar.

Click Download when you are done. The finished PDF is built in the tab and saved to your device. There is no account step and no watermark on the file.

Click into a line and type. This is real text editing, not a note stuck over the page: the editor reads the document's own text and rewrites it, so a search inside the finished file finds your new wording and copy-paste picks it up.

The fonts embedded in your file are pulled out and reused, and the text color is sampled from the page itself, so a fixed line sits next to its neighbours without looking patched. A wrong price on an invoice, a stale date on a letter, a misspelled name in a contract: each one is a click and a retype.

One limit to know. If the line came from a scan, there is no text underneath to click into, and nothing will happen. That case is covered further down.

Pick the Text tool and click an empty spot. A new block appears where you clicked and you type into it. Set the size and the color once and the next block follows suit. Text added this way is written into the document on download, so it stays selectable and searchable, exactly like the words that came with the file.

A lot of forms are just a picture of ruled lines. Most viewers give you a cursor that lands nowhere, which is the moment people give up and go looking for a printer.

Use the Text tool instead. Click on the blank line, type the answer, then drag the block until it sits on the rule. Zoom in first on a rough scan and the placement gets much easier.

Preview is already on every Mac, and it is good at highlighting, signing, and shuffling pages. What it will not do is let you click a line of body text and retype it. That is the job people come here for.

Open this page in Safari or Chrome, drop the file in, and edit. Nothing installs, so it works the same on an old MacBook as on a new one, and there is no Acrobat subscription in the way.

The editor is a web page, so the only requirement is a current browser. That matters most on a managed work laptop where you cannot install software: nothing to install means nothing to ask IT for. Chromebooks and Linux machines, which most desktop PDF software skips entirely, get the full toolbar too.

Open the same page in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android. Tap a line to edit it, pinch to zoom when the text is small, and the finished file lands in your downloads ready to send back. A screen that size is tight for heavy page work, but a quick correction on the move is genuinely quicker than getting to a desk.

The Whiteout tool paints a clean box over anything you want out of sight: an old fax header, a printed mistake, a block you are about to retype. Draw the box, then type over it if you need to.

Being straight about what it does: whiteout covers content, it does not remove it from the file. Anyone who copies text out of the finished PDF can still get at what is underneath. For anything sensitive, use redaction, which deletes the text itself.

Open Find, type the old wording and the new wording, and step through the matches or change them all at once. A renamed product or a moved office address is one pass instead of a page-by-page hunt. Replaced text keeps the font and color of the line it sits in.

The Forms tool picks up the real fields in a document: text boxes, checkboxes, and radio buttons. Click a field, type or tick, move on. What you enter is written into the file on download, so it prints the same everywhere, including on the office machine running a very old reader.

The Sign tool makes a signature three ways: draw it with a mouse or finger, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of the one you use on paper. There is a separate tab for initials, which is what most leases actually want on every page. The signature is saved for the next document.

Annotate covers the review pass. Highlight the sentences that matter, underline the terms you want checked, strike out the lines that should go, and circle things with the freehand pen. Each mark has its own colors, and all of them survive into the exported file, so the person you send it to sees what you flagged in any reader.

The Images tool drops a PNG or JPG onto any page: a logo on an invoice, a photo on a cover, a diagram the words cannot replace. Drag it into place and resize it by the corners. It is embedded in the document, so it holds its spot in every reader and at every zoom level.

The Links tool turns a spot on the page into a real hyperlink. A portfolio where each project title opens the live site, or an invoice where the payment line goes to the payment page. The links keep working after download.

The page rail handles the document surgery. Drag pages into a new order, rotate the one that scanned sideways, delete the blank at the end, duplicate a page you need twice, insert a fresh one, or crop the margins. All of it comes out in the same download as your text edits, in one pass.

A scan is a photograph of a page. The letters you see are pixels, so there is no text object to select and nothing to retype. Running OCR reads the picture and lays a text layer over it, which makes the document searchable and lets you copy from it. Editing that recognized text in place is still on the roadmap, so for now a scan is best handled with the Text tool on top.

An encrypted PDF cannot be read until the password comes off, so it will not open in the editor. Remove the password first (you need to know it), then edit the unlocked copy. If you want it protected again, add a new password to the finished file.

Size caps are 50 MB and 200 pages. Over that, split the document, edit the part that needs work, and merge it back. A big file also takes a moment to appear, because your own machine does the rendering.

Editing costs nothing and needs no account, and the export is clean on every plan. Pro pays for different things: full-year bank statement splits, the complete invoice template set, and higher Smart Fill limits. None of them sit between you and a text edit.
