Max 50MB

The real limits, spelled out: files up to 50 MB and 200 pages. Your upload sits in short-term storage and auto-deletes after 2 hours. Editing is free, no signup, and the export carries no watermark. One honest caveat: a big file can take a moment to load, because your machine does the rendering.

Edit existing text

Change the text that's already on the page

This is real text editing, not a sticky note floating over the page. We parse the PDF's actual content stream, so when you click a line and retype it, the change becomes part of the document. Search still finds the new words. Copy and paste still works.

Fix a typo in a contract. Update a price on an invoice. Correct a date on a letter. The editor pulls the original embedded fonts out of your file and samples the page for the exact text color, so the fixed line matches its neighbors. One limit worth knowing: scanned pages have no text to click into, so scans need OCR first.

Add text

Add new text anywhere on a PDF

Pick the Text tool, click an empty spot, and type. New blocks can go anywhere: a missing label on a form, a note in a margin, an address on a cover page. You control the font size and color, and the block stays aligned to the page grid, so additions look like they were always there. Text you add is selectable in the downloaded file, the same as the original text around it.

Whiteout

White out parts of a PDF

The Whiteout tool paints a clean box over anything you want gone from view: an old fax header, a printed mistake, a block you plan to retype. Draw the box, match it to the page background, and type fresh text on top if you need to.

Worth being straight about the difference: whiteout covers content, it does not delete it from the file's data. If you are hiding sensitive information rather than tidying a page, use the redact tool, which removes the text for good.

Fill forms

Fill out a PDF form online

The Forms tool finds the fillable fields in your PDF: text boxes, checkboxes, and radio buttons. Click a field, type or tick, move to the next. Tax forms, job applications, school paperwork, and rental agreements all work this way. If a form was built without real fields (a common annoyance), switch to the Text tool and type directly over the blank lines instead. Either way, what you enter is baked into the download, so it prints and displays the same everywhere.

Sign

Sign a PDF without printing it

Three ways to make a signature: draw it with your mouse or finger, type your name and pick a script style, or upload a photo of your ink signature. The editor saves it so you can place it on any page, resize it, and reuse it on the next document. Signing a lease or an offer letter takes about a minute, with no print-sign-scan loop and no separate signing app.

Annotate

Highlight and annotate a PDF

The Annotate tool covers the review workflow. Highlight the sentences that matter. Underline terms you want checked. Strike out lines that should go. There's a freehand pen for circling and margin arrows too. Each mark has its own color set, and marks live in the exported file, so the person you send it to sees exactly what you flagged, in any PDF reader.

Find and replace

Find and replace text across every page

Renamed a product? New company address? Open Find, type the old text and the new text, and step through the matches or replace them all at once. It works across all 200 pages of a document, which beats hunting down each mention by eye. The replaced text keeps the surrounding font and color treatment, the same as a hand edit.

Images

Add an image to a PDF

Drop a PNG or JPG onto any page with the Images tool: a logo on an invoice, a photo on a report cover, a diagram where the words aren't enough. Drag the image where you want it and resize it by its corners. It gets embedded into the document itself, so it stays put in every reader, on every device, at every zoom level.

Links

Add clickable links to a PDF

A printed URL nobody can click is a small daily frustration. The Links tool fixes it: select the spot, paste the address, done. Send a portfolio where every project title opens the live site, or an invoice where the payment line goes straight to the payment page. The links keep working in any PDF reader after download.

Pages

Reorder, rotate, and delete PDF pages

The page rail handles document surgery. Drag pages into a new order, rotate the one that scanned sideways, delete the blank page at the end, duplicate a page you need twice, or insert a fresh blank one. There's a crop tool for trimming margins too. All of it lands in the same download as your text edits, one pass, one file.

One session, one file

Mix every tool in a single edit

Real documents rarely need just one fix. A lease comes back with a wrong date, an unsigned line, and a page in the wrong order. You can handle all three here in one sitting: retype the date, place your saved signature, drag the page where it belongs, and download once. The editor keeps a full undo history across every tool and every page, so an experiment is never a risk.

That single-pass workflow is the quiet advantage over juggling three single-purpose tools. Nothing gets exported halfway, re-uploaded, and degraded along the way. The file goes in once and comes out finished.

Editing a PDF online, answered

How do I edit a PDF online for free?+

Open FileHook, drop your PDF onto the upload card, then click any text on the page and start typing. When you finish, download the edited file. Editing costs nothing, and the download comes out clean with no watermark. The other tools on this page (whiteout, forms, signatures, highlights, find and replace) work in the same session at no cost.

Is it safe to edit a PDF online?+

Your keystrokes, font work, and layout changes all happen inside your browser tab, so the content of your edits never travels anywhere. The file itself is copied to short-term storage once so pages render reliably, and that copy deletes itself after 2 hours. There is no account, and we run no analytics on file contents.

Does it work on a Mac, a Chromebook, or my phone?+

FileHook is a web page, so it runs anywhere a modern browser runs: Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, and Android. There is no separate app per platform and nothing to install, which also makes it work on locked-down office laptops. A desktop screen gives you more room for the toolbars, but every tool works on a phone too.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?+

Not inline yet. A scan is a picture of text, so there is nothing to click into. Our OCR tool can make a scanned PDF searchable and copyable in the same browser. Editing the recognized text in place is on the roadmap.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF?+

Locked files will not open in the editor directly. Remove the password first with the unlock tool on this site (you need to know the password), then edit the unlocked copy as normal.

How do I highlight text in a PDF?+

Pick the Annotate tool in the toolbar and choose Highlight, then drag across the words you want marked. Underline, strikethrough, and freehand drawing sit in the same menu, each with its own color options.

Can I protect the PDF again after editing?+

Download your edited file, then run it through the protect tool to add a password. Both steps work in the same browser, and neither needs an account.

Will the layout stay the same after I edit?+

The layout holds. We extract the original embedded fonts, sample the page to match the original colors, and re-embed everything when you save. Most documents look pixel-identical to the source.

Are there limits when I edit a PDF online?+

Files up to 50 MB and 200 pages. That covers invoices, contracts, reports, and most ebooks. Very large files load more slowly because all the rendering happens on your machine. If your document is over the page limit, split it first with the split tool, edit the part that needs work, and merge the pieces back together.
