Separate bank statements by monthand send only the months asked for

Someone asked you for monthly statements, and the bank handed you one long PDF. Drop that file below. The splitter reads the statement period on every page, sorts the pages into months, and saves each month as its own file.

Loading splitter…

The scan and the split both run inside your browser tab. Your statement stays on your computer.

Who asks for monthly files

Three requests, one fix

Lenders and landlords

Mortgage and personal-loan underwriters usually want your last 3 to 6 months of statements, each month as its own document. Landlords ask for the same when you apply for a rental. Sending a 60-page annual PDF forces them to dig. Sending Mar-2025.pdf, Apr-2025.pdf and May-2025.pdf answers the request exactly as it was written, and keeps the other nine months private.

Tax software and accountants

Bookkeeping runs on a monthly rhythm. Accounting tools import one statement per period, and your accountant reconciles each month against the books. A single 12-month file has to be pulled apart before any of that work can start, so bookkeepers split first and import second. Predictable names help here too: files sort themselves in the right order inside any import dialog.

Visa applications

Many embassy and consulate checklists ask for bank statements covering the last 3 or 6 months as proof of funds. Case officers process stacks of these daily, and clearly separated monthly documents are the format they expect. One combined PDF risks a request for resubmission, which costs you days.

How it works

What happens to your PDF, step by step

  1. Load your statement PDF. Drop the multi-month statement onto the upload card at the top of this page, or click it to browse. Files up to 50 MB work.
  2. Let the page scan for months. Every page is read for a statement period, a month name, or a date stamp. Pages that share a period are grouped into the same month.
  3. Check the groups. Each detected month appears as a card with its page range and file name. If a label is off, pick the right month or year from the dropdown before downloading.
  4. Download one PDF per month. Save months individually, or take the whole set as a ZIP. Files are named by month and year, like Jan-2024.pdf and Feb-2024.pdf.

Pages that carry no date of their own, like overflow pages in the middle of a long transaction list, inherit the month of the page before them. That rule keeps multi-page months together and is right nearly every time. When it is not, the dropdown fix takes a second.

One honest limit: scanned statements. A photographed or image-only PDF has no text layer, so there is nothing for the detector to read. If your bank offers a downloadable PDF, use that version.

After the split

Named, zipped, ready to send

Each month saves as Mon-YYYY.pdf, so a year becomes Jan-2024.pdf through Dec-2024.pdf. Need everything at once? The ZIP download bundles the full set, named after your original file. Need to go further than PDF? The bank statement converter turns any monthly file into CSV or Excel rows, and the bank guides cover quirks of specific banks, from Chase to HDFC.

The first 3 months of any statement split free, with clean output. Pro takes the cap off for $3.99 a month and adds batch uploads, which matters in January when a year of statements lands on your desk at once.

Monthly statements, answered

How do I separate bank statements by month?+

Drop the multi-month PDF on the splitter at the top of this page. It reads each page for a statement period or date, groups pages into months, and gives you one PDF per month plus a ZIP of the whole set. A full-year statement usually finishes in well under a minute on a normal laptop.

A lender wants my last 3 months. Do I send the whole year?+

Send only the months on the request. Underwriters read faster when each month arrives as its own file, and you avoid sharing months nobody asked for. If your bank offers a last-quarter download, split that file: the free tier handles up to 3 months per statement, which matches the typical lender request.

How long should I keep bank statements?+

One year is a safe floor for everyday records. Statements that back up a tax return are worth keeping at least 3 years, the usual IRS look-back window, and 7 years if you claimed a loss or bad debt. Keep mortgage and business-account statements until the loan or the books are closed. Monthly files make the keep-or-shred call easier because each month stands alone.

My statement has two accounts in one PDF. What happens?+

Pages group by month no matter which account they belong to, so a combined checking-and-savings statement still comes out as clean monthly files. If each account carries its own statement period inside one PDF, cut the file apart by account first with the regular Split PDF tool, then run each account through this page.

Can I turn the monthly files into CSV or Excel?+

The splitter outputs PDFs. To get spreadsheet rows for bookkeeping or tax software, run a monthly file through our bank statement converter. It reads the transaction table and exports CSV or Excel.

What does this cost?+

Splitting the first 3 months of any statement is free, with no watermark on the output. Pro covers the full year and adds batch uploads for $3.99 a month. Free use is limited to one split per day.

Does it recognise my bank?+

Any bank that prints a date or statement period on the page works: Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist and TD Bank on the US side, plus ICICI, HDFC, State Bank of India and Axis for Indian accounts. The bank guides have per-bank notes.

What about scanned statements?+

Image-only PDFs carry no text to read, so automatic grouping fails on them today. In-browser OCR is planned. Until then, a text-based download from your bank's website is the reliable input.

A month came out labelled wrong. Can I fix it?+

Every detected group has a month and a year field you can change before downloading, and the file name updates to match. Wrong labels are rare on statements with clear period headers; they show up most on layouts that only print dates inside the transaction rows.

My PDF spans two calendar years. Does that work?+

Groups are keyed on month plus year, so a statement running October 2023 through March 2024 separates into Oct-2023.pdf through Mar-2024.pdf with the right year on every file. Months from different years never merge, even when they share a name.
