OCR a PDF — FAQ

What does this OCR tool do?+

It reads the text in a scanned, image-only PDF and adds an invisible text layer on top of your pages. The result is a searchable PDF — you can select, copy and search the text, and the page still looks exactly the same.

How do I make a scanned PDF searchable?+

Drop your scanned PDF, click "Make searchable", and wait while we read each page. When it's done, download the new PDF. The text layer is selectable and findable in any PDF reader.

Does my PDF get uploaded anywhere?+

No. The OCR runs entirely in your browser on your device. Your file never leaves your computer.

Which languages are supported?+

English text is supported today. Documents in other languages may still produce some text, but accuracy is best on English.

Why is it slow on big documents?+

OCR is heavy and it runs on your device, one page at a time, so nothing is uploaded. A long scan can take a while — you can leave the tab open while it works.

Will the page images change?+

No. We keep your original page images and lay the recognized text on top invisibly. Free exports carry a small watermark — upgrade to Pro for a clean file.
