Converting PDF to Excel: FAQ

Does my PDF leave my device?+

No. Everything happens in your browser, which matters because the PDFs people convert to spreadsheets are usually statements, invoices and reports.

Why is this marked Beta?+

Because a PDF has no idea what a table is. It stores letters at positions on a page, and the rows and columns you see are just how those letters line up. We rebuild the grid from those positions, which works well on ordinary tables and less well on unusual ones. Always check the result.

Where does it struggle?+

Merged cells, cells whose text wraps onto a second line, and tables nested inside other tables. Columns that are very close together can also be read as one. Plain, ruled, left-aligned tables come out best.

I got an empty file or an error.+

Your PDF is almost certainly a scan, which is a photograph of a page with no text inside it. Run it through the OCR tool first to add a text layer, then convert it here.

How are pages laid out in the spreadsheet?+

One worksheet per page, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on. That keeps a long document traceable back to the original.

Can it handle a password-protected PDF?+

Not while it is locked. Remove the password with the unlock tool first.
