What has to be on an Australian tax invoice?+
For sales under $1,000 the ATO lists seven details: wording that shows the document is meant to be a tax invoice, the seller's identity, the seller's ABN, the date of issue, a brief description of each item with quantity and price, the GST amount, and the extent to which each sale is taxable. From $1,000 up, the buyer's identity or ABN must appear as well.
When do I have to give a customer a tax invoice?+
Whenever a customer asks for one on a taxable sale of more than $82.50 including GST, you have 28 days from the request to provide it. Below that amount a tax invoice is optional.
How does this generator handle GST and my ABN?+
Set the country to Australia and a GST line at a flat 10% is added on top of your subtotal, with amounts in AUD. Fill the ABN field and it prints under your business details.
Can GST sit inside the total instead of on its own line?+
The ATO accepts a "Total price includes GST" statement when the GST is exactly one eleventh of the total price. This tool prints GST as a separate line instead, which is the format bookkeepers and BAS agents prefer to reconcile.
I'm not registered for GST. Can I still send a tax invoice?+
No. Businesses that are not GST-registered issue standard invoices, without the words "tax invoice" and without charging GST. Registration becomes mandatory once GST turnover reaches $75,000, or $150,000 for not-for-profits.
Does the PDF carry the words "tax invoice"?+
Not in the big header yet: the free templates title the document INVOICE. Until an Australia-specific layout ships, type "This is a tax invoice" into the notes field so the required wording appears in print.
