Split a bank statement PDF into monthly files

Statement PDFs grow fast: a year of pages, cheque images, transaction lists that run on and on. Drop yours below and it comes back as one small PDF per month, each sized to pass the upload forms that reject the full-year file.

Loading splitter…

Client-side processing: the PDF is opened in your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server.

The upload-limit problem

When the statement is too big to upload

Loan portals, accounting inboxes and government forms all put a cap on attachments. Some stop at 10 MB. Some stop at a page count. An annual statement with cheque images blows past both, and the error message rarely tells you why.

Splitting by month solves it twice over. Twelve small files each slide under the size cap, and the reviewer on the other side gets the exact month they wanted instead of scrolling a 60-page PDF. Banks charge nothing extra for the big export; you just need to cut it down before it goes anywhere.

If a single month is still too heavy (that happens with scanned cheque pages), the Compress PDF tool shrinks it further without touching the text.

Under the hood

Month detection you can check and correct

  • Text-layer scan. Every page is checked for markers like "Statement period", "January 2024", or transaction-date stamps.
  • Inheritance rule. A page with no date of its own takes the month of the page before it, which keeps long transaction lists in one piece.
  • Visible groups. Before anything downloads, each detected month shows as a card with its page range and file name. Fix a month or year with the dropdown if the bank's header was ambiguous.
  • ZIP or individual. Grab all months in one archive, or save only the files you plan to send.

Fair warning on speed: a 50 MB statement takes a noticeably longer scan than a lean 2 MB one, since every page's text has to be read. It finishes; give it a moment.

Splitting statement PDFs, answered

How do I split a bank statement PDF by month?+

Use the splitter at the top of this page: drop the multi-month PDF, wait a few seconds while each page is read for statement-period markers, check the detected month groups, then download them one by one or as a single ZIP.

My statement is too big to upload. Will splitting fix it?+

In most cases, yes. A portal that rejects a 30 MB annual statement will usually take a 2 or 3 MB monthly file without complaint. Each output PDF contains only its own month's pages, so size drops roughly in proportion to the number of months. Splitting also gets long statements under page-count caps, not just megabyte caps.

Can a 12-month statement become 12 separate files?+

That is the standard result: drop a full-year PDF and the groups come out as Jan-2024.pdf through Dec-2024.pdf. The free tier splits the first 3 months of a file; Pro covers all 12 and adds batch uploads for $3.99 a month.

Will the splitter work on a Chase / Bank of America / Wells Fargo statement?+

Statements from Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, US Bank, PNC, Truist and most credit unions all carry printed statement periods or dates, which is all the splitter needs. It looks for headers like "Statement period: 01/01/2024 to 01/31/2024" as well as plain month names.

What if the month detection misses a page?+

Pages with no header of their own inherit the previous month, so transaction-overflow pages still land in the right file. When a boundary does come out wrong, change the month or year on that group before downloading and the file name updates with it.

Can I split scanned (image-only) bank statements?+

Not automatically yet. A scanned page has no text layer, so there is nothing to detect. In-browser OCR for scans is on the roadmap; today the dependable input is the text-based PDF your bank's website exports.

Is there a file-size limit?+

The splitter accepts files up to 50 MB, which covers almost anything a bank exports. If yours is bigger, it is usually because of embedded cheque images; ask the bank for the statement without cheque copies, or split it in halves with the general Split PDF tool first.

Cut the big file down

Drop the statement in the splitter above and send monthly files that actually fit the form. First 3 months of any statement are free.
