E-signature legality in the United Arab Emirates
Electronic signatures are recognised on the UAE mainland, but only a qualified electronic signature is given statutory equivalence to a handwritten signature.
Lawful and admissible for an ordinary private commercial contract, but materially weaker than in most other countries. There is no statutory presumption, so the whole burden of proving identity and intent falls on you. For anything of real value, a qualified signature from a licensed provider, or wet ink, is the defensible choice.
The governing law
Federal Decree-Law No. 46 of 2021 on Electronic Transactions and Trust Services, effective 2 January 2022, repealing Federal Law No. 1 of 2006; Cabinet Resolution No. 28 of 2023 (Executive Regulation); ADGM Electronic Transactions Regulations 2021 for that free zone.

Electronic signature, advanced electronic signature and qualified electronic signature, plus electronic seals, qualified timestamps and Digital ID.

What you cannot sign electronically in the United Arab Emirates
This is the part worth reading twice. These documents either cannot be signed electronically at all, or need a higher-assurance form than an ordinary online signature.
- Anything requiring notarisation
- Land registration formalities
- Court filings and government submissions
- Personal status and licensing formalities
- In the ADGM free zone specifically: powers of attorney, wills and codicils, and sales or long leases of immovable property
What matters in practice
The 2021 Decree-Law contains no fixed list of excluded documents. Exclusions are delegated to Cabinet decision, and what actually constrains electronic signing is the other legislation the Decree-Law preserves. Admissibility is protected, but weight is tiered: only a qualified signature is deemed equal to a handwritten one, and nothing below advanced gets any presumption. Nobody can be forced to deal electronically, though consent can be inferred from conduct.
