What is the e-Aadhaar PDF password?
The first 4 letters of your name in capitals, then your year of birth. Suresh Kumar, born in 1990, types SURE1990. Know yours? Type it once below to save a copy of your own Aadhaar PDF that opens without a password.
The e-Aadhaar password format
The first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS, followed by your year of birth as 4 digits (YYYY). 8 characters for most people.
Example (made-up details): Suresh Kumar, born 1990 = SURE1990
Skip the space and carry on into the next name.
Example (made-up details): Sai Kumar, born 1990 = SAIK1990
The dot is kept as one of the 4 characters. The space after it is skipped.
Example (made-up details): P. Kumar, born 1990 = P.KU1990
Use the whole name, then the year. The password is shorter than 8 characters.
Example (made-up details): Ria, born 1990 = RIA1990
Where this rule comes from
UIDAI, the authority that issues Aadhaar, states this rule in its own FAQ, under Aadhaar Online Services. All four examples above are UIDAI's. The FAQ does not say anything about an older format, so we do not list one.

Why the password is refused
- Small letters. The 4 letters must be capitals. sure1990 will not open the file. SURE1990 will.
- The full date of birth instead of the year. Only the year goes in, as 4 digits. Not the day, not the month. This is the opposite of most bank statements, which use the day and month.
- A name that is not the one on the Aadhaar. The letters come from your name as it is printed on the Aadhaar. If the card says S. Kumar and you type SURE, it fails. Look at the name printed on your Aadhaar letter or card and copy it from there.
- Dropping the dot, or keeping the space. In UIDAI's examples a dot after an initial is kept and a space is skipped. P. Kumar becomes P.KU, and Sai Kumar becomes SAIK.
Tired of typing it every time?
Drop the PDF below and type the password once. You get a copy that opens without it. The unlocking runs in your browser, so the file and the password are not uploaded. A wrong password only shows an error, and the tool cannot open a file you do not have the password for.
Before you save an open copy
This is for your own Aadhaar and your own password. The copy you save here opens without a password, so store it somewhere safe. e-Aadhaar is digitally signed by UIDAI, and that signature only checks out on the original file. Keep the original for any office that wants to verify the signature, and use the open copy for reading and printing.
Download your e-Aadhaar
UIDAI says you can download it from the myAadhaar portal or the Aadhaar app, using your Aadhaar number, enrolment number or VID. An OTP goes to your registered mobile number.
Open it with your password
Type the first 4 letters of your name in capitals and your year of birth, with nothing in between. For Suresh Kumar born in 1990 that is SURE1990.
Save a copy without the password
Drop the PDF in the box above, type the same password once, and download the open copy. Keep the original file too.
e-Aadhaar PDF password: questions
What is the password for the e-Aadhaar PDF?
The first 4 letters of your name in capitals, followed by your year of birth as 4 digits. UIDAI's example is Suresh Kumar, born in 1990, whose password is SURE1990.
My e-Aadhaar password is not working. What should I check?
Check four things. The letters are capitals. You used only your year of birth, not the full date. The name is the one printed on your Aadhaar, not a short form. And if your name has an initial, the dot is kept and the space is skipped, as in P.KU1990 for P. Kumar.
My name has only 3 letters. What is my e-Aadhaar password?
UIDAI gives two cases. If you have a second name, the letters carry on into it: Sai Kumar, born 1990, is SAIK1990. If the Aadhaar shows a single short name, the whole name is used: Ria, born 1990, is RIA1990.
Can I remove the password from my e-Aadhaar PDF?
Yes, if it is your own Aadhaar and you know the password. Type it once in the tool on this page and save a copy that opens without it. Keep the original as well, because UIDAI's digital signature only checks out on the original file.
Can this open the file if I do not know the password?
No. You have to type the correct password first. The tool does not guess or recover passwords. If you cannot work it out, download a fresh e-Aadhaar from UIDAI and check the name printed on it.
Is my file uploaded when I unlock it here?
No. The unlocking runs in your browser. The PDF and the password stay on your device and are not sent to our server.
