The income tax PDF password format
Your PAN in small letters, followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no space. 18 characters. A company, firm or other non-individual uses its date of incorporation or formation in place of a date of birth.
Example (made-up details): PAN ABCDE1234F, born 21 January 1991 = abcde1234f21011991

Where this rule comes from
For the AIS, the Income Tax Department states the rule itself, in the steps for downloading the AIS as a PDF. For the ITR-V and for notices, we could not find the rule on an official page we could open, so we rely on two tax sites that agree with each other and with the AIS rule. One of them also lists the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) under the same rule. We have only that one source for the TIS, so treat it as likely, not confirmed. The email a notice came in usually states the password too.

Why the password is refused
- PAN in capitals. Your PAN is printed in capitals, but the password wants small letters. ABCDE1234F becomes abcde1234f. This is the most common slip, because the PAN card itself shows capitals.
- A space between the PAN and the date. There is no space, slash or dash anywhere. The password is one run of 18 characters.
- A two-digit year, or month before day. The date is day, month, then the full 4-digit year. 21 January 1991 is 21011991.
- A date of birth that differs from the PAN record. Use the date of birth as it is on your PAN. A company or firm uses its date of incorporation or formation.
- It is a Form 26AS, not an AIS. Form 26AS is reported to open with the date of birth alone, with no PAN in front. See the Form 26AS page on this site.

Your PAN in small letters followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no space. For PAN ABCDE1234F and a birthday of 15 August 1990, the password is abcde1234f15081990. Two tax sites give this rule, and it matches the rule the Income Tax Department publishes for the AIS.
What is the password for the AIS PDF?
Your PAN in small letters followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no space. The Income Tax Department's own example is PAN AAAAA1234A with a birthday of 21 January 1991, which gives aaaaa1234a21011991. A company or firm uses its date of incorporation or formation.
What is the password for an intimation under section 143(1)?
The same as the ITR-V: your PAN in small letters followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. Two tax sites give this rule. The email the intimation came in usually states it as well.
My income tax PDF password is not working. What should I check?
Type the PAN in small letters, not capitals. Leave no space before the date. Use day, month and a 4-digit year. Use the date of birth on your PAN record. And check that the file is not a Form 26AS, which uses the date of birth alone.
Is the Form 16 password the same?
Not always. The Form 16 an employee receives is locked by the employer or its payroll company, so the rule differs from one employer to the next. Ask your HR or payroll team, or read the email it came in.
Can this open the file if I do not know the password?
No. You have to type the correct password first. The tool does not guess or recover passwords. If you cannot work it out, download the file again from the income tax e-filing portal and check the PAN and date of birth on your PAN card.
Is my file uploaded when I unlock it here?
No. The unlocking runs in your browser. The PDF and the password stay on your device and are not sent to our server.

The first 4 letters of your name in capitals, then your year of birth as 4 digits, like SURE1990.
