What is the e-PAN card PDF password?
Your date of birth as 8 digits: day, month, then the full year. Born 15 March 1990? Type 15031990. Know yours? Type it once below to save a copy of your own e-PAN that opens without a password.
The e-PAN card password format
Your date of birth as DDMMYYYY: 2 digits for the day, 2 for the month, 4 for the year. 8 digits, no slashes, no spaces.
Example (made-up details): Born 15 March 1990 = 15031990
Where this rule comes from
Protean (the company that used to be NSDL e-Gov) issues PAN cards for the Income Tax Department, and it states this rule in two of its own guides. Both are linked below. PAN cards are also issued through UTIITSL and as an instant e-PAN on the income tax e-filing portal. We did not find a password rule on the official pages we could read for those two, so if your file came from there, try this format first and then read the email or screen the file came with.

Why the password is refused
- Month before day. The day comes first. 5 March is 0503, not 0305.
- A two-digit year. The year is 4 digits. 15 March 1990 is 15031990, not 150390.
- A missing zero. A single-digit day or month needs a zero in front. 5 January 1995 is 05011995. The password is always 8 digits.
- Slashes or dashes. Type digits only. 15/03/1990 will not open the file.
- A different date from the one on your PAN. The file is locked with the date of birth in your PAN record. If that record has a different date from your other papers, use the one printed on the PAN card.
Tired of typing it every time?
Drop the PDF below and type the password once. You get a copy that opens without it. The unlocking runs in your browser, so the file and the password are not uploaded. A wrong password only shows an error, and the tool cannot open a file you do not have the password for.
Before you save an open copy
This is for your own e-PAN and your own password. The copy you save here opens without a password, so store it somewhere safe. An e-PAN is digitally signed, and that signature only checks out on the original file. Keep the original for anyone who needs to verify it, and use the open copy for reading and printing.
Download your e-PAN
Protean's guide says you can download it with your PAN and date of birth, or with the acknowledgement number of your application, after an OTP check. It is free for 30 days after the PAN is issued or changed, and there is a small fee after that.
Open it with your date of birth
Type your date of birth as 8 digits, day first, with nothing in between. Born 15 March 1990 means 15031990.
Save a copy without the password
Drop the PDF in the box above, type the same 8 digits once, and download the open copy. Keep the original file too.
e-PAN card PDF password: questions
What is the password for the e-PAN card PDF?
Your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. Protean's own example is a birthday of 15 March 1990, which gives the password 15031990.
My e-PAN password is not working. What should I check?
Check that the day comes before the month, that the year has 4 digits, that single-digit days and months have a zero in front, and that you typed digits only. Then check the date of birth printed on your PAN card, because the file uses that date.
Is the e-PAN password the same as the password for my ITR or AIS PDF?
No. The e-PAN uses only your date of birth. An ITR-V or AIS PDF uses your PAN in small letters followed by your date of birth. See the income tax PDF page on this site for that rule.
Can I remove the password from my e-PAN PDF?
Yes, if it is your own e-PAN and you know the password. Type it once in the tool on this page and save a copy that opens without it. Keep the original as well, because the digital signature only checks out on the original file.
Can this open the file if I do not know the password?
No. You have to type the correct password first. The tool does not guess or recover passwords. If you cannot work it out, check the date of birth on your PAN card, or download the e-PAN again.
Is my file uploaded when I unlock it here?
No. The unlocking runs in your browser. The PDF and the password stay on your device and are not sent to our server.
